Do a Little Troubleshooting
Do some troubleshooting first yourself before you call a repairman just in case it's something quick and simple that you could have repaired yourself.
- Check the thermostat first to see if it was turned off, or is malfunctioning. Be sure it's set to heat, then adjust the temperature. Listen for the heat to kick on. Be sure if the thermostat is a digital that you can see the readout. If it's difficult to see, try to change the batteries and see if this helps anything.
- If the thermostat wasn't the issue, get to your furnace and remove the air filter. If you haven't done this task in awhile, the filter may be very filthy. If it's too dirty it will cause your furnace to shut off as it isn't getting enough air. Remove the air filter and replace it with a new one, then hit the reset button on your furnace. Be sure to change your furnace filter every other month.
- If the air filter wasn't the issue, be sure your vents are all open around your home. If your furnace is running but not heating your home enough, it could be due to the vents all being blocked or closed. Make sure all of the vents are open and nothing is blocking the air flow to the rooms. You should have at least a foot of clearance around your vents to ensure a proper flow of air. Blocking off vents in one room will not make another room warmer, so be sure they are all open.
After you've done these things, if your furnace is still not working properly, it's time to call in a professional for help. Call heating repair services for help troubleshooting and repairing you furnace to get things working properly again.
