Save With A Solar Air Conditioner

Are you tired of paying expensive electricity bills? The installation of a solar air conditioner might be just what you need to say goodbye. Solar systems work with the same goals as traditional units, but they generate much of their energy from the sun, to ultimately limit their electricity use. Learn more about these innovative units to determine if a solar air conditioner is right for your needs.

System Configuration

The term solar air conditioner might give the illusion that it's a standalone unit. However, these solar systems work in conjunction with an existing central air conditioner system. So, if you want to upgrade to solar capability, you need to ensure your new central air conditioner system is suitable.

Common configurations for these add-on units include a PV hybrid system and a thermal hybrid system. PV hybrid systems capture energy from the sun and transfer it to the air conditioner unit for use. However, PV hybrid systems also store the excess energy from the sun and convert it into battery form. During periods when the panels are unable to capture energy from the sun, such as on a cloudy day, the battery storage is then used to power the system, so there is no need for an electrical connection.

Thermal hybrid panels work similarly to PV hybrid panels, except for the fact that they don't allow for battery storage. In the event, the panels are unable to convert enough energy from the sun at any given time, the air conditioner unit will have to operate off traditional electricity. Given the lack of battery storage, thermal hybrid systems can sometimes only offer limited solar power.

Two-Step Installation Process

The installation of a solar air conditioner is complex, as it typically involves a two-step process. In addition to the solar panel installation process, a skilled HVAC technician must first correctly select the appropriate central unit for your home, as the sizing and setup of the unit are still important regardless of the power source.

To get the full benefit of solar energy, it's also critical that the installation of the solar power configuration is performed correctly. If it's not, the central unit could suffer damage and the unit will not efficiently receive energy from the panels, which will defeat the purpose of having them in the first place.

For a homeowner who is considering this option, early planning is important, as an HVAC professional cannot begin their installation process until the panels have been correctly installed.
